Erika Sax mezzo soprano

 
 

The lyric dramatic mezzo soprano  Erika Sax made her début already before she graduated from the University College of Opera in Stockholm, as Rossinis Cenerentola at the Wermland Opera in Karlstad, Sweden 2002. Her performance  there led straight to engagement at the Gothenburg Opera as Pauline in Tjajkovskijs Pique Dame.

Erika has since then been a regular guest at the Gothenburg Opera singing parts as; Maddalena in Verdis Rigoletto,  Orlofsky in Strauss Der Fledermaus, Alisa in Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor, Herodias Page in Strauss´ Salome, Larina in Tjajkovskijs Eugen Onegin, Sonjetka in Schostakovichs Lady Macbeth from Mzensk, Myrtale in Massenets Thaïs, Maffio Orsini in Donizettis Lucrezia Borgia, Cornelia and Sesto in Handels Julius Caesar, The third Lady in Mozarts The Magic Flute, Zulma in Rossinis LÍtaliana in Algeri, A Nymph in Dvoraks Rusalka, The Nurse in Mussorgskijs Boris Godunov, Liselotte/Maria-Lucia in Carl Unander Scharins world première of The sleep clinic.



At the Swedish Folkopera she has sung Gertrude in Gounods Romeo&Juliet and Maddalena in the critically acclaimed production of Verdis Rigoletto directed by Mira Bartov. At Läckö Castle Opera Erika portraited the party of Clarice in Rossinis La pietra del Paragone and at Norrlandsoperan she has sung Mary in Wagners The Flying Dutchman.

The début at the Royal Swedish Opera came with Pauline in Tjajkovskijs Pique Dame. Erika has also sung the part of Hermia in Brittens A Midsummernights dream at the Vasa Theatre in Stockholm.


Erika has performed in concert with the Gothenburg Opera´s Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, The Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, The Dala Sinfonietta among others. 

Together with the Drottningholm court Baroque ensemble she has appeared as Storgé in Handels opera Jephta and with Östgöta Blåsarsymfoniker she has sung the part of The Mother in Stravinskijs Mavra.

At several occations she has in concert  represented Sweden at the Bellapais International Music Festival in nothern Cyprus.


Erika Sax´s sacred and lieder repertory include; Verdi Requiem, Christmas Oratorio, St John´s Passion, Magnificat (J.S Bach), The Messiah (Handel), Harmonie messe, Requiem, Coronation mass (Mozart), Songs by the sea (Nystroem), Stabat Mater (Pergolesi), The Swedish Mass (Roman), The Holy Night (Rosenberg), LÓratorie de Noël (Saint-Saëns), Gloria (Vivaldi) among others.

She has worked with conducters such as; Christian Badea, Jan Latham Koenig, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Alexander Polianichko, Gian Carlo Andretta, , Olaf Henzold, Stefan Klingele, Patrik Ringborg, Stefan Solyom, Sigfried Köhler, Thomas Dausgaard among others.

Erika has recieved scholarships from The Royal Swedish Acadamy of Music, The Kerstin Meyer Award as well as the prestigious Anders Wall scholarship.

Recent engagements include Annina in Christof Loy’s production of Richard Strauss Der Rosenkavalier at the Royal Swedish Opera,  Madame Giry in The Phantom of he Opera and Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos at The Gothenburg Opera
